The characters were underdeveloped and basically unlikable. The style was overly simple from the plot right down to sentence structure. I was so disappointed and I will probably bid this author goodbye.Fire and Ice: A Novel All I could think of as I read this book was "Who wrote this book." Certainly, Julie Garwood did not write FIRE AND ICE. I have read all of Garwood's romantic suspense but this one just did not fill the bill.
In one of the reviews I just read, the writer said she doubted this was the same authour who had written previous Julie Garwood novels.I thought all the contemporary novels Ms Garwood had written were a bit stilted and lacked the humour evident, to at least a small degree, in the historicals that she had written.I certainly preferred the earlier books.
Save your money on this one and reread her earlier works for your Garwood fix. I love Julie Garwood's earlier novels, but lately it seems she's just cranking out the books w/the same boring storyline. I agree with a lot of the reviews on this one - same plot but with different character names. I actually checked the publishing date just to be sure I hadn't already read this book.
FIRE AND ICE carries the reader into intriguing and adventurous mystery through the experience of Sophie Rose, who I met in Julie's book, SHADOW DANCE. As with her other books, it was hard to put this one down and I read it in record time. I've only recently discovered this series of Julie Garwood's books. Members of the Buchanan family appear in this book, and keep the unity going with the series of friends and family from Julie's books that keep me waiting for her next publication. There is no using of our Lord's name as an expletive in any of Julie's book, for which I am profoundly grateful. They keep drawing me back, waiting for her next book to be published. Aside from excellent writing, charmingly-intriguing characters and dastardly villeins, she gives us family and friends to follow throughout this series of her books.
Not an easy guy to get to know or like. The book as a whole was unbelievable.Having said this I have not given up on Ms. Can't even say I'd call it a romance. I can not believe Sophie, who is working for a very small newspaper, would go to Alaksa to investigate a murder. It was truly that romantic.
Let me start by saying I am truly a fan of Julie Garwood. Garwood's writing. Jake is very aloof. I anxiously await all of her books. This book was a disappointment.
I found Sophie to be out-in-the-orbit somewhere with her thinking. I will continue to buy her books and hope for an improvement with the next one. The first half of the book spent way too much time on sub-characters that in the end had little to do with the story. As far as romance, it did not even start till halfway through the book. To paraphrase, it seemed like one of the characters told the other "I'm hot, you're hot, let's have sex".
